Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd
Syd Barrett a founding member of Pink Floyd is an example of an artist who was affected by psychedelic drugs in the early sixties. The original guitarist/singer of Pink Floyd began experimenting with LSD in nineteen-sixty five. This led to an increased and overuse of the drug. After Syd began using LSD his behavior started becoming erratic. There were reports of Barrett just strumming the same chord an entire concert and not singing during songs. At one point Syd had just started detuning his guitar in stage while the other band members endured. At this point David Gilmore an old school mate of Barrett's was brought into Pink Floud as a second guitarist to compensate for Syd's behavior. In nineteen seventy Barrett was taken to a psych ward for suspected mental illness due to abuse of LSD. At this time Barrett left the band and went into seclusion until his death in 2006. During this time Barrett continued his personal painting hobby but only returning to the music scene to make some solo albums.

Syd Barrett was indeed one tortured soul…. Which do you think aided the other? Do you think the schizophrenia contributed to the heavy LSD consumption or did the LSD consumption lead to the schizophrenia? This question I am sure is left up to medical professionals, but a question I am super intrigued about is, what if Syd Barrett didn’t go crazy? Would Pink Floyd have become as legendary as they are known today? As far as I’m concerned David Gilmore is one of the most talented musicians across several generations and I’ve always wondered whether or not Pink Floyd would have become what they are had he never joined the band.
ReplyDeleteSyd Barrett had such a strange, psychedelic life and in some degree was less known for his contributions to Pink Floyd and more talked about in drugs and art. I am happy to see that there are still people out there who know Syd Barrett. As a Pink Floyd fan I was the only one who knew he even existed in my circle of friends. It was sad to see Syd live a silent and long retirement life filled with burning his own diaries and cutting off his locks, and changed his name back to simply ''Roger''.
ReplyDeleteThe story of Syd Barrett is tragic and its sad to know that such a talented individual can unravel and lose everything so quickly. I recently read the Pink Floyd edition of Rolling Stone and they made a very interesting point about how his mental illness escalated due to a mixture of LSD and his inability to cope with his rising fame. You can see similar things happen to a lot of musicians in the last 10-20 years where the pressure of fame mixes with substance abuse and causes people to fall apart. There was another story about Syd walking into a recording session for Wish You Were Here. He ended up sitting through the entire session before anyone recognized him because of how drastically his mental illness had an impact on his physical appearance.
